What to Expect at Your First Brow Tattoo Appointment
Updated: Oct 11

By Heather Porter, Brow Social Cosmetic Tattoo — Newport, Brisbane
Booking a cosmetic tattoo appointment for the first time can feel like a big step. Most clients arrive a little nervous — and most of those same clients leave wondering why they waited so long. The reality is much more relaxed than people expect, but knowing what’s going to happen before you get there makes a real difference.
Here’s exactly what a first appointment at Brow Social looks like, from the moment you arrive to the moment you walk out. If you’re still deciding on a style, you can read about ombré (link: browsocial.com/ombre-brows), nano (link: browsocial.com/nano-brows) and combination brows (link: browsocial.com/combination-brows) first.
Before you come in
A few things are worth taking care of in the days before your appointment. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, as it thins the blood and can affect how your skin takes the pigment. If you’re taking blood-thinning supplements like fish oil or ibuprofen, try to skip them in the few days leading up — though if you’re on prescribed medication, don’t stop taking it, just let me know when you arrive.
Retinol and strong exfoliating products should be avoided near the brow area for at least a week before your appointment. These thin and sensitise the skin in ways that can affect how the pigment settles and how you heal.
On the day itself, come with clean skin — no heavy products on the brow area. And eat beforehand. It sounds obvious, but arriving with your blood sugar stable makes a real difference to your comfort during the procedure.
When you arrive
Newport Marketplace has free parking directly outside, so you won’t need to worry about finding a spot. The appointment runs for around two to two and a half hours in total. We never rush.
The consultation
We start with a proper sit-down conversation — not a quick check, a real one. We’ll talk through your skin type, any history of reactions or sensitivities, how active you are, what you love about your brows and what you’d like to change. If you’ve brought photos — of brows you like or ones you definitely don’t want — these are incredibly helpful and very welcome.
This is also the time to ask every question you’ve been holding. Nothing is too small or too obvious. I’d much rather answer everything now than have you leave wondering about something.
Brow design and mapping
Once we’ve talked through everything, I’ll map the brow shape directly on your face using a brow pencil. Nothing is permanent at this point — this is a drawing, not a tattoo. You’ll be able to see exactly what the shape looks like on your own face: the thickness, the arch, the tail length, the placement.
If you want anything adjusted, we adjust it. We go back and forth until the shape is exactly right and you’re completely happy. This step takes as long as it needs to — getting the design right before we start is just as important as the procedure itself.
The procedure
Once the shape is approved, I apply a topical anaesthetic cream to the brow area and leave it to work for around 20 minutes. Most clients use this time to relax or check their phones. By the time we start, the area will be noticeably numb.
The tattooing itself is usually much more comfortable than people expect. Most clients describe it as mild pressure or light scratching — not the sensation they’d imagined. I apply additional numbing product as needed throughout the procedure to keep you comfortable. You can close your eyes and rest, or we can chat — either is completely fine. I’ll check in with you regularly.
The tattooing takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on the style and your skin.
Your first look
Once I’ve finished and cleaned up the area, you’ll have your first look. The brows will appear darker and bolder than the healed result — this is completely normal and expected. The pigment needs time to settle into the skin before you see what the final result actually looks like.
Before you leave, we’ll go through your aftercare together — what to do, what to avoid, and what the healing process will look and feel like week by week. You’ll leave with written instructions so you don’t have to rely on memory.
What healing actually looks like
Knowing what to expect during the healing process is probably the thing that saves clients the most stress, so I want to be specific about it.
In the first few days, the brows look darker and more defined than they will once healed. As the skin heals through the first week, it will peel and flake — and the most important thing here is to let it happen naturally. Don’t pick at the skin. It’s tempting, I know, but picking at healing brows can lift pigment from the skin and leave patchy areas that are difficult to correct.
Around the end of the first week and into the second, many clients notice the brows appearing much lighter — sometimes almost as if the colour has gone. This is completely normal. It’s called the ghost phase: the top layer of skin has shed and the pigment is settling into the deeper layers, temporarily appearing lighter while the new skin forms over it. The colour comes back. By weeks four to six, the pigment has settled into its true healed colour and you can see what the result is actually going to look like.
The perfecting touch-up
At four to six weeks, I recommend coming back for your perfecting touch-up. This isn’t optional — it’s part of the process. Everyone’s skin takes pigment differently, and this appointment is where we refine anything that needs it: adding a little density in an area that healed lighter, adjusting the colour, or simply topping up what’s there. It’s also a chance to see how your brows are settling and make sure you’re happy with where things are heading.
Touch-up pricing for Brow Social clients is $150 for your perfecting touch-up at four to six weeks, $250 from six to twelve months, $350 for a refresh at twelve to twenty-four months, and $450 for a colour refresh after two years — so maintaining your result costs a fraction of the initial appointment.
